Following the 2007 World Series win, Red Sox players and owners met with wounded Veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and learned of the medical challenges many of our returning Veterans were facing. Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner made a commitment, following this 4-hour visit, to partner with the Massachusetts General Hospital to address the invisible wounds of war. That’s when Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program was established with a mission to heal the invisible wounds for Veterans, Service Members and their Families through world-class clinical care, wellness, education and research. This is the first partnership of its kind in the nation between an Academic Medical Center and a Major League Baseball team.
As a National Center of Excellence, Home Base operates the first and largest private-sector clinic in the nation devoted to healing invisible wounds such as post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, depression, co-occurring substance use disorder, military sexual trauma, family relationship challenges and other issues associated with military service. Your support is crucial to our success. 95% of Home Base’s funding is based on individual, corporate, and foundational support. The Run to Home Base presented by New Balance serves as the cornerstone for the much-needed resources to change and save lives.
