There are many benefits to the camp experience, from getting outdoors and making new friends to growing more independent and becoming more confident. But many transgender and gender non-conforming kids do not have this opportunity. The transgender community is under attack and none more so than gender creative youth and the families who support them. With the advent of bathroom bills, social media attacks, bullying and society’s general misunderstanding of what it means to be transgender (at any age) most trans kiddos cannot safely attend camp.
This is why camps specially designed for gender creative children are so important. At such a camp, children can just be children, have fun and do everything any kid does at camp. Unfortunately, there are no established camps for gender creative kids in the Southern United States. This is why Gender Infinity is holding the First Inaugural Gender Infinity Family Camp this November!!!
The Gender Infinity Family Camp is being established in partnership with an established camping organization just an hour and half outside Houston (the location is being kept private for safety reasons and will be released to families who register). This first camp will include family members and siblings of the transgender youth the weekend of November 9 – 11, 2018 and include all things you hope for when you think of camp: campfires and smores, canoeing, crafts, horseback riding, obstacle courses and so much more. Registration will open in early September.
Many overhead costs can be covered by this fundraiser, including training and background checks for volunteers, registration costs for camp counselors, website development, t-shirts and snacks. Some families that most need the support and reprieve offered by a camp of this sort simply cannot afford it. Keeping the camp affordable is our goal with the additional hope we will raise enough money to offer scholarships for families who would not otherwise be able to attend.
If you want to support transgender and gender non-conforming youth by giving them a safe place to be kids, to make friends, and feel supported, this is your chance! Every dollar raised will go directly into the budget for the camp. The cost for one person to attend camp for two nights, not including overhead, is $164 (which represents half the cost of $328 as our partner organization is donating 50% upfront!!!). Any amount helps, but if you want to “sponsor” a camper at $164 you would be a true angel.
Please support these children. They deserve the chance to be happy, to be safe and to just be kids. Thank you!
Love, Gender Infinity Camp Team
