MEET THE GEEKBUS
She stood tall and proud, inviting, inspiring, creating innovation in the community. She was a mobile STEM makerspace providing educational experiences to thousands of students. These students were the future engineers, robot scientists, coders and technology innovators in San Antonio. She encouraged these students to dive into STEM topics while learning communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking skills. She is the Geekbus!
SAMSAT’s Geekbus was brought to life in 2011 when founder Scott Gray, co-founder Cliff Zintgraff, along with others formed a Texas-based nonprofit corporation, SASTEMIC, to increase experience and accessibility for STEM education in San Antonio. As luck would have it, Rackspace was looking for an organization to take ownership of their technology demonstration bus around the same time. With the generous help of the Graham Weston and Rackspace along with the 80/20 Foundation, the Geekbus was given to SASTEMIC with additional funding, turning the Geekbus into a mobile, hands on STEM lab for students in the San Antonio, Texas area.
“The Geekbus is one of the most transformative tools I have ever personally witnessed. When I would see kids getting on the bus and discovering the possibilities and then seeing the lightbulb go off over their heads is an experience I will never forget. Anyone of these kids can succeed in spite of their personal circumstances. We just have to help inspire them,” said SASTEMIC co-founder, Scott Gray.
Since its launch in 2011, Geekbus has inspired thousands of students by bringing cutting-edge technology and activities to schools, increasing its menu of the available curriculum to include structural engineering, coding, EV3 robotic programming and much more. The Geekbus loved her budding students and the students loved her.
But time has passed, and Geekbus now sits in the parking lot of SAMSAT in need of multiple repairs. Her once sleek coat of paint peels away from the heat of the sun. The interior that was once filled with excitement and the buzz of sparking imaginations now sits in desperate need of refurbishing due to the more than 10,000 K-12 students who she visits and inspires each year. Geekbus is in need a bit of love and help from the community to bring her back to life.
Your donations will bring our well-loved Geekbus back to her fullest potential so she can continue to inspire the future engineers, coders, and scientists of San Antonio. Join the cause by donating today so that we can continue to create bright futures for our children and community.
