The Child Life Program at GBMC is an incredible resource that many community hospitals are not able to provide. Certified Child Life Specialists help normalize the hospital experience for patients and their families. They promote effective coping skills through preparation, education, play, and other types of self-expression.
What exactly does a Child Life Specialist do? Here is the short list:
• Prepares children for medical procedures in a way that they understand
• Helps to reduce anxiety with coping strategies • Provides distraction during procedures using toys, dolls, iPads and conversation
• Promotes family-centered care by providing information and support for the entire family
How can you help? By contributing to today’s Giving Tuesday campaign, your gift can purchase items like playdough, used for sensory distraction, dolls used to explain procedures to children or even an iPad to use as a distraction during recovery.
