FUTURE GRINDZ pairs Upcountry youth with innovative and trustworthy food industry professions and community members. Together we tackle food insecurity while helping to usher the next generation of teens into adulthood - and sustainable, local employment. Currently we are working out of the All Kaina Grindz Food Truck with five (5) teens, to produce our Free Friday Meals, for Kupuna and those in need. We were recently awarded Fiscal Agency, via Hawai’i Maoli Foundation, and are currently seeking an Upcountry Commercial Kitchen, for our FUTURE GRINDZ Summer 2020 Pilot Program.
Our ultimate goal is to establish an after-school Academy where we teach our youth entry-level work and life skills, entrepreneurialism, and the importance of being of service to the community and the aina. Our teen apprentices will make use of farm surplus in value added product development, expand our Free Friday Meal program, and work fundraising events and caterings. Profits and donations will fund the FUTURE GRINDZ Scholarship Program and Start-up Incubator.
CV19 has critically increased the need for food security in the Islands, while also creating the need for new revenue streams for farms, and the monetizing of surplus. Concurrently, our local Public High School has a roughly 70% non-college going population, with inadequate facilities and resources to provide relevant, hands-on, job training. With our proposed project, we hope to address the need for industry-aligned job training and employment for teens, while also addressing food insecurity and farm surplus - Upcountry, Maui.
