In this season of gratitude and giving, my family has chosen to make a donation in support of uAspire and I hope you will consider joining me.
College costs are rising three times faster than inflation and eight times faster than wages. Today, students from low-income households pay over 150 percent of their families’ earnings to get a degree, and they are being burdened by debt that limits their lifelong potential. These challenges have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. When colleges and schools close, students can lose meals, health care, and a place to sleep. They’re unable to contact financial aid offices for answers to pressing questions or to complete tasks in order to access aid. There are millions of aspiring students, but they have no one to support them through the obstacles to their college dream.
Young people deserve more. They deserve a real chance to make a life for themselves and their families. They have everything it takes, but they need guidance to access financial aid and manage college costs. This is where uAspire comes in. uAspire works to ensure that all young people have the financial information and resources necessary to find an affordable path to–and through–a postsecondary education. Their college affordability advisors work one-on-one with high school seniors to identify affordable college options, maximize financial aid, and make informed decisions about where to attend college and how to pay for it. After high school graduation, students are supported by uAspire advisors to successfully enroll in college in the fall and persist through to complete their degree with a manageable debt load. 81% of uAspire’s students come from low-income backgrounds and 78% will be the first in their family to attend college.
Since uAspire launched its services in New York City in January 2018, they now advise over 4,000 students and have trained over 1,500 counselors and staff on college affordability topics. I am excited to support uAspire’s efforts in New York City and the thousands of students in our city who most need their help. I hope you will consider joining me to support this important work.
