Who Are We?
We are the managers of Meals on Wheels of College Park. This work is our passion. We began in 1974. Since that time, we’ve served thousands of local residents. As of today, we provide three meals a day, five days a week for 150 of our senior neighbors.
This pandemic has made everything harder for everyone--you’ve probably felt it too. Despite these obstacles, we are proud to say we haven’t stopped working. We push tirelessly to ensure our clients receive the meals they need, and we’re committed to keeping them and our volunteers safe--which sometimes means our clients don’t even get to see a friendly face with their meal. Often, we’re the only ones they get to see which makes it hard for our clients as well as our volunteers. We celebrate the hundreds of volunteers from the Prince George’s County community who have helped us bring meals to those in need.
Since the pandemic started, though, we’ve more than doubled our client base. Our clients need our help more than ever, and more need help each week. We are dedicated to continuing our mission to provide nutritional meals to seniors and people with disabilities, and to ensure that even if they can’t see us, we’re here for them. In this time of increased social isolation and increased health risks, our clients depend on us to provide a safe connection to the outside world.
Due to the pandemic, we can’t provide as much interaction as we usually do. Many of our clients are housebound and we’re the only people they see for long periods of time. Some of our regular drivers not only deliver meals, but they take clients to doctor appointments and help them with grocery shopping and other errands. We even have one driver who sometimes brings her daughter with her, so that she can play the violin for her clients. We often receive thank you letters and emails from clients or their families, for not only helping our clients to maintain their physical health, but for providing them with healthy meals that taste good and friendly interactions.
Why We’re Asking for Your Help
Since we started in 1974, we’ve operated out of the College Park United Methodist Church. We are in their debt for sharing their space with us while we share our meals with others. Last year, the Church Entered into an arrangement with an early learning school, which meant they needed to reclaim some of the space they’ve lent us these past 45 years.
While we celebrate their new success, we find we must now locate new premises for operation.
We are desperate to move to another location, but we need funds to do so. We are asking for help to raise funds to purchase a building, warehouse, or modular unit, as well as the supplies we need to keep operating and serving our 150+ clients. The equipment we need includes items like the following:
● Work tables
● Shelf units
● Pots and pans
Our goal for this is $500,000. A modular unit alone would be about $300,000, and then on top of that we’d need to purchase land, get water, gas, and electric hook-ups, and acquire all of the necessary permits. Alternatively, to purchase a warehouse or structure in our immediate area, will also cost approximately that much.
This is a big ask, but with our own building, we would have the space to continue our services while providing us with the stability we need for future operations. With our own building, we can refocus on our mission--helping people--without worrying about whether we have enough space to make the meals people need.
We know so many of you wish there was something you could do right now, so many want to assist but are fearful of leaving their homes or interacting with others. However, donating to our cause is something you can do right now. Donate a cup of coffee ($3) or a tank of gas ($30). Every dollar helps. Every dollar goes towards feeding our neighbors. Thank you for any help, and please share.
