Remembering our Heroes on 9/11...............
On September 11, 2019, the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation presented smart homes to two deserving catastrophically-wounded combat veterans. The Foundation exists in memory of Stephen Siller, who also sacrificed life and limb 18 years ago.
Stephen, who was assigned to Brooklyn’s Squad 1, had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word over his scanner of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, Stephen called his wife Sally and asked her to tell his brothers he would catch up with them later. He returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.
Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.
On September 12, 2001, Stephen’s family then carried his torch to keep his story of heroism and his guiding motto - “while we have time, let is so good” - alive. And they weren’t alone. The people of the United States wrapped their arms around New York City, and September 12th embodied so much of what makes America great. Perseverance. Unity. Generosity.
As we continue to honor the fallen, let’s live each day like it’s September 12, 2001. Let’s do good for others. Join us November 2nd in Ankeny as we raise money to give back to veterans and first responders, or please consider donating to the campaign if you are unable to attend. Thank you for your generosity!!
