Each year I try to find the right words to describe the life we live raising our kids with autism. It's full of joy and laughter but it is far from typical. Each step we take in growth and independence comes with much support and a lot of understanding.
The connections to other families has also given us a support system beyond what's typical. We have resources for questions that address our specific needs. We have families who know our kids, our sometimes unusual requests, and a cheerleading community bar none. It brings me comfort because I know some day these families will continue to support "our" kids, and continue to be their support system throughout their lives. It is a interesting and wonderful thing, that once you have a child with autism, all kids with autism become your family.
So join me this year as AutismUp stives to provide meaningful supports to individuals of all ages and their families. There is no question it is needed.
Olivia continues her employment at Wegmans. Her card making and sending is a bright spot for hundreds. She has joined the BOD of Autism learning to use her voice. Next step is working on a driving permit.
Spencer has international followers on his "Animal of the Day" videos. Again, bringing joy daily to hundreds, one of his next steps will be pursuing a docent position at the zoo.
Next steps take supports. I hope we can continue to count on your support of our family and extended family at AutismUp.
