Help us to keep the bookstore alive so that we can continue to support the Stockton-San Joaquin Libraries and promote literacy in San Joaquin County.
The Friends of the Stockton Public Library Bookstore is a nonprofit, volunteer organization dedicated to raising funds to support the Stockton-San Joaquin Public Library, which allows them to purchase new books and media, and fund much-needed library programs. Financial support is primarily obtained from the sale of gently-used books, music and film generously donated by our community, and through the sale of annual memberships.
Why We Need Your Help
During this pandemic, the bookstore was forced to temporarily close for a few months, and while we have been able to re-open as of June 1, we are limiting the number of hours of operation to protect the safety of our community, staff and volunteers. This limits our ability to generate the necessary funds for our library system, as well as keep our bookstore doors open. All the more reason why we have decided to start this campaign to provide an alternative option to our supporters to be able to donate directly to the Friends of the Stockton Library.
The City of Stockton, California, has one of the lowest literacy rates in the nation, where 1 in 4 adults lacks basic literacy skills. Being one of the few brick-and-mortar bookstores in Stockton, we are doing our best to stay vibrant and strong during this pandemic. This is not an easy task, and there are numerous challenges we struggle with daily; however, our goal is to be a resource to the community and continue to provide affordable, quality reading material to our population, and continue to generate income for our local libraries. With goverment resources strained by COVID-19, our fundraising efforts have become all the more crucial.
Who We Are
The Friends of the Stockton Public Library is a non-profit 501c3 corporation, originally founded in 1958 as part of a community-wide effort to build a new central library in downtown Stockton, California. Since then, the Friends have remained an active organization in the community, supporting and promoting our local libraries. In the 1980s the library began holding used book sales, and over the years these occasional book sales transformed into a permanent bookstore. Today, the Friends of the Library Bookstore, located at 1724 W Hammer Lane, Stockton, California, has become a cherished community bookstore and an essential funding source for our local libraries.
A message from Jeffrey Manta, manager of the Friends of the Stockton Library Bookstore:
We need your help!!! As the manager of the bookstore for the last couple of years, and as a loyal customer for over 20 years, I really can't imagine living in Stockton without this valuable and much loved community resource, and I think most of our customers feel the same. Thanks to all of you for your patronage and continued support, and please help us get through this difficult time. We look forward to a bright future!
