In the outskirts of Santa Cruz de Lorica, a quiet fishing village in the Córdoba Department, countless families have been forgotten entirely. For the humble inhabitants of the towns surrounding Lorica, however, this is just the latest example of government neglect. During the most difficult years of the violence perpetuated by the drug trade, Lorica and other towns in the region were caught in the crossfire between guerrilla and paramilitary groups, with many of the communities never receiving support nor respite. Years later, the effects from that devastating period are still acutely felt and now the coronavirus pandemic has made their situation even more difficult.
These innocent people, however, have not been forgotten entirely. A small community organization, Amigos de Buen Corazón (ABC), which translates to Kind-Hearted Friends, has taken on the mission of taking food and supplies to the otherwise helpless citizens in the remote towns surrounding Lorica. ABC started with a limited scope, and along their trips to assist families, they have become aware of countless others in need of similar help. Right now their funds are strained, but the community of volunteers that make up ABC are ready and willing to extend their reach, including the local motocarrodrivers who’ve been making the deliveries for free.
In order to accomplish this, Friends of Colombia member Carmen Galvis, who grew up 45 minutes away from Lorica, will teach a Colombian cooking class via Facebook Live. During this class Carmen will be preparing a traditional recipe with modest, accessible ingredients that could be made by the families that receive food from ABC. Therefore, if you attend the class, you will not only be able to learn a delicious Colombian recipe (ingredients listed below) but also understand the significance of having even the most basic ingredients.
$8 = Basic diet including rice, beans lentils, oil, etc.
$13 = Balanced diet including the above and a few proteins and vegetables
$20 = A more complete diet including more protein, vegetables, eggs and basic cleaning products for a month.
We’re asking for support from you, our very own kind-hearted friends, to attend the class and make a donation, however modest it might be. Friends of Colombia is committing to matching up to $1000 of donations, so we hope that you can contribute as well. To give you an idea of the impact of a donation, please see the scale below, with each level representing a week’s worth of supplies for a family of four.
We’re reaching out to you, our amigos de buenos corazones, because we sincerely appreciate all of the support you have provided over the years. Times are quite difficult right now, and we understand if it is not an ideal moment to donate. However, any small amount can make a massive difference in the lives of the lovely people living in and around Santa Cruz de Lorica.
Muchas gracias for everything you do, please be well, and we hope you come cook with Carmen!
