Tacoma Farmers Market is launching the Fresh Express Mobile Market and Home Delivery service to respond to the needs of our community during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.
TFM runs four seasonal markets in Tacoma that connect local farms and small businesses to the community. Farmers markets bring fresh produce into food deserts as well as thriving business districts, but with restricted hours and limited locations are only a small part of the solution to food access issues in our region. Prior to COVID-19, many households in Tacoma struggled with food insecurity: nearly 1 in 7 people in Washington are food insecure at some point in a year and tens of thousands of Pierce County residents rely on state and local food assistance programs to feed themselves and their families. COVID-19 has worsened food inequities and revealed new and existing economic, social, and health struggles in older adults, people with compromised immune systems, and underserved and under-resourced communities.
TFM's Fresh Express will strengthen our local food system by bringing fresh, affordable food from local farms into low-income, low-access areas of our region. We are offering limited home delivery to seniors and immunocompromised people and selecting mobile market sites at community gathering places in neighborhoods without easy access to healthy food. We are able to offer a dollar for dollar match on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP EBT - formerly known as food stamps), doubling buying power of fresh produce and helping our community eat more healthy fruits and vegetables. The Fresh Express also supports local farmers that have lost restaurant and market customers due to COVID-19, helping ensure that Pierce County farms survive the crisis.
Support for the Fresh Express contributes to a more equitable local food system. Funding will help cover the cost of fuel, vehicle insurance, and community outreach. Thank you for supporting our community!
