Help Free to Run Support Girls and Young Women in Afghanistan and Iraq!
Free to Run is a 501(c)3 charity that uses adventure sports to develop female leaders in Afghanistan and Iraq because they can and will be a force for positive change in their communities.
Race-based fundraising events are one of the main sources of funding for Free to Run's work with women and girls in our programs. To galvanize support for this important work during a time where nearly all races are cancelled, Free to Run is hosting a Virtual Race!
Registered virtual runners are invited to join our campaign and fundraise in conjunction with their virtual race. Click JOIN to set up your personal fundraising page.
Sign up for a race and you will receive a personalized video from a participant you will be virtually running with! The Free to Run member will take you on a journey through her own community where she runs, sharing facts about her daily life and society. Some of these routes will include:
- A trail run overlooking a major city in Afghanistan
- A city park run in Iraq
- A run through the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains
- A run in a participant’s yard in Southern Afghanistan
Fundraisers who raise $300 by 11/30 will receive a Free to Run T-Shirt. Fundraisers who raise $500 or more will receive an invitation to a special Zoom call with Free to Run participants in Afghanistan and Iraq! This is a unique, one of a kind opportunity to hear how your support will impact the lives of our female athletes and become inspired by their stories.

2020 has been a challenging year for everyone, but the work of Free to Run has not stopped and our goals are as important as ever. The women and girls in our programs include some of the most vulnerable members of society, and Free to Run staff are often the only lifeline they have outside their own families during quarantine.
As a way of continuing to support our participants through this crisis, Free to Run is maintaining a critical lifeline with our alumni and participants by calling alumni to share at-home workouts that they and their families can do, conducting mental health and family health check-ins, and running virtual Life Skills through Sports programming for a new cohort of participants.
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SPORT...But it's not just about sports. It's a chance to experience a full and free life.
With programs in Afghanistan and Iraq, Free to Run focuses specifically on supporting women and girls living in conflict areas. Why? We believe they are in greatest need and they hold the most potential for positive change.
Everyone deserves the chance to run, play and experience the outdoors. At Free to Run, we are working tirelessly to make that happen.
