In 2018 I had the opportunity to spend some time in Afghanistan working with women in the Afghanistan Army. I had an amazing experience and it truly changed my life. These women, like all women and girls in Afghanistan, wake up everyday to a country in conflict. Most women still serve in the traditional roles of being a wife and mother and live extremely oppressed lives. Being able to interact and become friends with the women I worked with gave me the chance to see how excited they got to have the opportunity to workout with one another, go for a run, or do something active. It‘s inspiring to see a group of women come together in 100 degree weather with sweatsuits and traditional headscarfs on to go for a 5 mile run. They are the most amazing group of women I have ever met. They are my sisters. I am joining the Free to Run team this spring for the NYC Half Marathon, to run for all the women and girls in Afghanistan who want to go out and exercise, but cannot due to their safety and roles as women. Please help in supporting a cause that means so much to me!
EMPOWERMENT THROUGH SPORT
Free to Run is a 501(c)3 charity that uses adventure sports to develop female leaders in areas of conflict because they can and will be a force for positive change. But it's not just about sports. It's a chance to experience a full and free life.
With programs in Afghanistan and Iraq, Free to Run focuses specifically on supporting women and girls living in conflict areas. Why? We believe they are in greatest need and they hold the most potential for positive change.
Everyone deserves the chance to run, play and experience the outdoors. At Free to Run, we are working tirelessly to make that happen.
Please support our 2019 New York City Half Marathon runners whose support will help Free to Run bring running, outdoor adventure, and leadership to amazing girls in our programs.
