Every year for the past nine years, the Gunnery field hockey team has played in a Play4TheCure fundraiser. This game aims to raise awareness about various cancers, and cancer prevention, and to also raise funds for cancer research. While the girls typically wear pink, it is important to note that this is a fundraiser for ALL cancers, not just breast cancer.
In 2015 we held a head shaving contest and sent out a Crowdrise link (https://www.crowdrise.com/tanyanongera-play4thecure/fundraiser/gunnerywestover). This culminated in a Pink-Out night field hockey game where we also played some half time games to fundraise. In total, Westover (a team we partnered with) and Gunnery raised over $2,300.
In 2016 we played a fundraiser game against the boys' hockey team. The boys helped the girls fundraise by getting sponsored to play. The Gunnery on campus donations totaled of $755, and our crowdrise page raised $850 (https://www.crowdrise.com/westover-and-gunnery-field-hockey), bringing us to a final total of $1603 ($400 below our targeted number).
In (2017), we hoped to surpass both of these numbers. We had various fundraising efforts around campus, as well as a Crowdrise page: Gunnery/Westover 8th Annual Play4TheCure. With on campus cash donations totalling $1,209, and our Crowdrise page bringing in an exceptional, $1,635, we were able to raise a sum total of $2,844.
Our student body plays a major role in the fundraising effort. Over the years, the format of our fundraiser has evolved. With the help of our student body, friends and family, and extended gunnery community, we successfully met, and exceeded our goal; raising a total of $4,084.40
Our goal was to raise at least $2,900. Our main event was a coed field hockey game. We also sold beaded bracelets and necklaces (Beads Beat Cancer), as well as baked goods. For those who were too far away to participate in the on-campus portion of our fundraiser, we opened up a Crowdrise platform for online donations.
Last year (2019)
With your help and support last year, we exceeded our goal of $4,200 by over $3,900. We hosted another coed field hockey game here on campus, sold baked goods, hot chocolate, cotton candy, t-shirts, and we continued our “Beads Beat Cancer” campaign. Our Crowdrise page also proved to be a great draw for friends and family off campus. We thank you all for your support and the role all played in making last year a successful one.
This year (2020)
With your help and support last year, we exceeded our goal by raising over $8,100, and ofcourse, we aim to top that this year. Our new goal is $8,200.
Unfortunately we will not host a game this year, but continue to seek your support through donations and raffle ticket sales. We thank you in advance for your support and the role you are playing in helping us find a cure for cancer.
