For those new or old to Friends, each year VBFS hosts its spring fundraiser, called Founders Day. Founders Day recognizes a person or persons who either presently or in the past impacted our school in positive ways. In March of 2020, the world went into lockdown due to COVID-19. Within days, VBFS teachers stepped forward to offer a virtual curriculum to make sure our students continued to receive a Friends education. During this time, Friends School teachers (like all teachers dealing with the pandemic) had to relearn how to teach in a virtual world. From March to June, VBFS faculty and staff worked tirelessly to make sure our students remained engaged in the learning process. Then came June, and VBFS quietly reopened safely for summer camps in a COVID world. Our June re-opening was scary as COVID-19 was still relatively new. Next, came the full re-opening of our academic program in August. In a world that saw COVID-19 on the rise, public officials saying, "We are in for the darkest winter in recorded history," and the timeline for an available vaccine still unknown, VBFS teachers arrived at work on time, masked, and ready to teach in-person for our students, your children.
Bold, brave, and bodacious are the words that come to mind when describing the VBFS faculty and staff over the past year and a half! For these reasons, along with a host of others, we'd like our entire community to join us on Saturday, May 22 to celebrate the Virginia Beach Friends School faculty and staff for the 2020-21 Founders Day Celebration.
The event will mirror the same format as our socially distanced pod Fall Festival. More details will follow in the days and weeks to come. Also, over the last two years Founders Day has raised $50,000 each year for our Annual Fund. Leading up to the event, our fundraising team will be reaching out to the members of the community for donations and gifts to help meet our goal. When you give to Friends School, you not only make a mark on our current student body, but future generations of students to come. Please mark your calendars and come out to celebrate the end of the year and the hard work of our teaching staff!
Your children have experienced campus programs in-person, socialized with their peers, played for hours outside during recess, explored our gardens, benefitted from our curriculum, enjoyed the extracurriculars, and have had a wonderfully successful year while many students in our area were only participating in virtual learning. The teachers deserve all the credit for the successes accomplished at Friends School this year. We are thankful!
