The Covid-19 has not decreased the needs that foster children have. In fact, in some ways, as other sources have had to close their doors, The Wardrobe has increased the demand for supplies, and we are busier than ever. We offer free quality clothing and supplies to children in foster and kinship care here in the Treasure Valley area. Upon their abrupt relocation, it is common for distraught children to enter a new foster home with very few belongings, sometimes with just the clothes they are wearing at the time of the transfer. Our non-profit company was created for the purpose of helping these children. Our sole purpose is to provide particularly quality or even new clothing as well as hygiene supplies for free to any age foster child. We believe having quality and current-style clothing to wear (perhaps for the first time) can boost the self-esteem of these kids and offer the potential to feel more accepted in their school settings every day.
We have inventory from donations that poured in weekly prior to the pandemic, and we gift indiviaully requested clothing items by appointment to these children. If we have plenty, they get to take plenty...for free! We love to see the excitement on their faces as they "shop". However, at this point, our appointment location has been compromised due to Covid-19 virus issues, but because we still need to get these clothes and items to children in need, our Board has decided to personally drive delivery packages to drop off their items.
Our need is two-fold. Firstly, we have the need for gas cards ($200 worth) in order to make deliveries to children's foster homes. Right now, certain speciality stores that offer discounted prices are closed due to the fact that they are exclusively clothing stores and are considered non-essential. However, this creates a problem because often families take the small amount they receive upon placement to go to the store and buy what the child needs, utilizing speciality stores to stretch the money to cover the child's needs as far as possible. With their doors closed, more than two sets of clothing are hard to get upon placement right now for some families. We can deliver a weeks worth of good clothing upon order still, due to our essential nature. But while some families can reach us, others live over a half hour away, are homebound due to surgery, or are of the most vulnerable population. These clients we drive to ourselves and deliver orders to their doorstep, and we need gas in our vehicle to do this.
Second, we have outgrown our storage units to house and sort our donations. We have boxes and boxes of more donations that we still need to fit into the current sorting unit, and there is hardly any room left to fit more bins into it, as you can see. The cost for one climate-controled 10x20 storage unit is $1350. If you are interested in learning more about our non-profit company, feel free to read on. Either way, would you please consider sending us any size donation to cover these costs so that we can continue to serve foster children's needs?
The community has been very generous in providing for the clothing needs. We are grateful to receive weekly donations of quality clothing for this worthwhile cause. Once donations are dropped off, our volunteers help by washing and sorting clothes. Two months ago, we were graciously provided with a donated 10x10 storage unit that is climate-controlled. A BIG THANK YOU TO ACORN STORAGE! This has enabled our volunteers to work in a warm, dry environment while they sort and place clothing in sizing bins awaiting appointments for gifting to children. Since opening in December 2019, we have given away over $3500 worth of quality clothing and new supplies to over 60 foster children. If you wish to donate to this cause, we would be grateful for any size gift.
