In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.
Masha was born in 2013 and has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is an extremely rare chromosomal disorder that affects many parts of the body. It is so rare that is took 5 years for her to be diagnosed. Masha was born with a cleft lip and palate, heart disease, kidney issues (reflux) and recurrent chest infections. Masha's mother is raising her alone and their monthly income is only US$100. In 2018, Maya's Hope funded Masha's cleft palate repair surgery. Since she entered our program her mother says she has "come alive".
We are currently raising funds to cover the cost of formula, diapers and medications for Masha for the next 3 months!
