Our team FOOTSTEPS FOR FRED was named in memory of Fred Richards; husband and father. Fred first experienced a limp when walking and attributed at first to an ankle or a knee injury. He was told that he needed to get decent shoes and that would correct the problem; however, the problem became increasingly more apparent. Fred soon began to fall and trip for no apparent reason; thus the team name of FOOTSTEPS FOR FRED was quite fitting.
ALS became an official member and new reality for his family on November 9, 2004, when Fred was given the official diagnosis. Four months after diagnosis Fred lost his battle with ALS on March 20, 2005. Fred was 1 of 5 family members to be diagnosed with ALS, he carried the familial gene; therefore, his children and grandchild have a greater than 50% chance of one day being diagnosed with ALS.
Fred made an impression on everyone that he met and was always willing to give you the shirt off his back to help. Some people knew him by names such as husband, father, uncle, Butch, Pinky, Dyantite, Rabbit or N1LXP. He worked on the Martha’s Vineyard ferries, was a cook at Whalom Park amusement park, a custodian at his church, Our Lady of Immaculate, a furniture factory worker, auction/warehouse, worker for State Line Auction, a truck driver for Royal Steam Heater, and even an escort car for oversized loads. When not working Fred enjoyed tinkering with his Ham and CB radios; as well as his computer. He also enjoyed camping with his family with their pop up trailer.
Each year his family walks 7 miles along the Cape Cod canal along with thousands of others to support the work of the ALS Family Charitable Foundation. This marks the 16th anniversary of the FOOTSTEPS FOR FRED team; however, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the walk will be held virtually in our own neighborhoods. Our team goal is to raise $1,250.00; to support the research and families with ALS. The ultimate goal is to one day find a cure for this terrible disease. Please consider donating to this worthy cause; no amount is too small, the smallest donation can make the biggest difference. The FOOTSTEPS FOR FRED would like to thank you in advance for your generosity!
