For the past three years, Mestre Betinho & the Capoeira Karkara family, in conjunction with the Capoeira Cultural Arts Foundation (a 501(c)3 Non-Profit) have been committed to raising funds and providing aid for families in dire need in mestre’s hometown of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Typically, we do this outreach work at the end of the year to provide much needed food, holiday celebrations, and a capoeira graduation event (batizado). However, we all know this year has turned out quite differently than we imagined. Brazil is experiencing a severe crisis as it currently has the highest number of COVID 19 cases and deaths in the world other than the U.S., and the numbers continue to surge daily. The community in Salvador Bahia, which already faced economic distress before this pandemic, has been hit hard and has left many without a job or adequate assistance from the government to help make ends meet during this time of indefinite uncertainty. Due to the immediate and severe needs of the people we aim to provide assistance to annually, we have decided not to wait until the end of the year.
Our goal is to provide as many “cesta basicas” as possible to the families who need it the most in the 4 surrounding neighborhoods close to where Mestre was raised. Cesta basica literally means “basket of basics” and refers to a package of staple food items such as rice, beans, noodles, sugar and salt, enough to feed a typical small family for approximately a few weeks. We would like to provide these cesta basicas for 80 families who are in dire need of basic goods to keep their family nourished daily. 100% of your tax-deductible donation will go directly toward our mission of getting this food into the homes of these families as quickly as possible. On Mestre Betinho’s birthday, July 7, at 6:30 PM EST he will be teaching a live Zoom class. This is a donation based class and all proceeds will go toward this cause. We suggest a minimum donation of $10 to participate. 827 6618 9364 is the meeting ID and the password is CCAF. The class will also be available live on CCAF’s Facebook (@CapoeiraCAF - be sure to follow us to see it!) and Instagram (@mestre.betinhokarkara). This class is open to all capoeiristas, all levels, all groups. There is no other way he would rather spend his birthday than by doing what he loves - teaching capoeira - and especially in support of a cause he feels so passionately about. He would love to see all capoeiristas there no matter how big or small your donation is, to celebrate his birthday in such a positive way together.
All your donations for this event will be collected on behalf of CCAF. The purpose of the Capoeira Cultural Arts Foundation is to fundraise for educational and cultural programming, outreach and scholarships for Capoeira Karkara domestically as well as in Mestre Betinho’s hometown community in Bahia, Brazil. We thank you in advance for your support that will provide a profound sense of relief that is much needed by so many children and families in Salvador, Bahia, especially now during the pandemic and the devastating effects it has only begun to have on its people. We thank you for your support and efforts toward helping us achieve these goals.
