Fishing for Plastic is a non-profit organization aimed at enrolling local fishermen to help clean plastic from their shorelines by compensating them per pound of plastic collected.

Co-founders Angela Burns and Bill Atherholt are excited to be launching the Fishing for Plastic pilot project in Marsh Harbour, Bahamas in May 2019.

It all began over a decade ago. Angela was dismayed at the plastic she saw on Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Ocean beaches when she sailed around the world with her family. Seeing piles of plastic mounded up on uninhabited islands made her realize that we are all in this together. Our oceans are connected and so is our trash.

Bill spent 2 years sailing the Caribbean with his daughter and remembers a day when he walked across an island in anticipation of finding a pristine, uninhabited beach and was heartbroken by instead finding more plastic than sand.

When they met and shared their stories and passion for clean beaches and healthy oceans, the idea of supporting fishermen to clean beaches was born. Many fishermen are working hard to support their families in the face of dwindling fish stocks and some of the worst plastic pollution is found along the coastlines of developing nations. It seemed like a natural fit!

To kick off ongoing collections in the Bahamas, the community of Marsh Harbour will be having their first ever Fishing for Plastic Derby on May 25, 2019. Teams will enjoy some friendly competition as they work hard to collect the biggest mounds of plastic for prizes.

As Bill and Angela shared this idea not only with the many wonderful volunteers who have helped launch Fishing for Plastic, but also with friends, family and co-workers, they were inspired by how many people, all over the world wanted to join in and clean up! So, the Fishing for Plastic International Clean-up was born!  AKA :the Virtual Fishing for Plastic Derby
