In 2019 the state of Maine became the first state to pass a blatantly unconstitutional law banning public schools from using Native American names and imagery. Currently 4 states (Illinois, Utah, Connecticut, and New York) have similar pending legislation and at least 6 others (Vermont, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Washington) have considered or are considering the same.
We simply have no choice but to fight this in the court system. Such legislation violates both the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. We have an excellent attorney who has agreed to take on this legal effort on a pro bono basis. He asks only to have court filing fees and travel expenses covered which is the purpose of this fund. It is critical to prevail in court so as to create the legal precedent to stop these unconstitutional laws from being passed in other states-- effectively wiping out proud Native tradition state wide with one act of a legislature.
Please donate generously toward this legal fund as we fight to preserve Native identity.
