Introduction Program Request Summary
Help Urgent Food Need in Flint Michigan!
Initiated by two Roman Catholic nuns in 2002, the St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center (NEW Life) is a faith-based nonprofit organization that serves structurally unemployed men and women in North Flint, Michigan. Our mission is to offer transformational programs that provide life skills, education, and workforce training to help individuals become self-sufficient and support their families. We are committed to building trusting and enduring relationships with families who receive assistance through our programs. To receive support from NLC, an individual must have a genuine desire to change his or her situation and must regularly participate in activities for the duration of the program in which he or she is enrolled. As a critical part of our mission, we operate a food pantry that employs graduates of our programs of life change to serve over 3,000 people monthly with food and basic needs items. We also prepare hot meals 3 days per week and offer a variety of community services, including crisis intervention for those we serve. During this critical time, we are requesting support for our Food Pantry during our 2021 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2020.
The NEW Life food pantry has been in operation for 17 years, serving the families of North Flint. Our target areas are the 48504 and 48505 zip codes. The food pantry serves men, women and children who meet the federal guidelines for being below the poverty line and live within our target area zip codes. Uniquely, our food pantry is one of the few in the city that provides meats and other sources of protein with each meal while also ensuring that we connect users with other services available at NEW Life. The NEW Life food pantry directly addresses the Basic Needs Impact Area and the provision of food for Emergency Support services. Our program significantly reduces the number of Flint residents going without food each month. Specifically, we provide food for families to take home on Tuesdays and Thursdays, hot meals three days a week, and basic personal items and clothing on demand. Each family can visit our Food Pantry and receive a box of food every-other week (twice per month).

The Impact the NEW Life Food Pantry Makes… Michelle had five children of her own and a “live in” who was the father of her two youngest children. Each time our Executive Director, Sr. Carol went to their home, he was on the floor watching TV, eating or sleeping in front of the TV. He believed, “it was her job to take care of things in the house as well as the children.” After being at the Center she began to speak up to him. One day she asked Sr. Carol how to get rid of a leach. We spoke with her about some possible approaches she could use. A couple of days later he called the Center asking what we are doing with the women at the Center because Michelle was making him uncomfortable by her questions and comments. The receptionist, who had also graduated from our program of life change, said “they are feeding us cups of courage and it is good to the very last drop!” He hung up on her! Michelle was empowered. She gained courage. Her life took a different direction, James was no longer welcome in the house and the children began doing better in school. The NEW Life Food Pantry provides a safety net for Michelle in her household while she pursues new work and educational opportunities for herself and her children.
