I am honored and excited to be running my first ever Boston Marathon on April 20, 2020 supporting Family Reach- a charity I am extremely proud to run for.
Family Reach is a national organization alleviating the financial burden of cancer for patients and their families.
Cancer cuts many household incomes in half as patients and caregivers put careers on hold during treatment. This loss of income paired with new, out-of-pocket costs forces families to make dangerous decisions - do they skip a chemo appointment to pay their mortgage? Through financial assistance and innovative financial interventions, we’re empowering families with the tools and knowledge they need to keep a roof over their heads and maintain access to treatment, ultimately increasing their loved one’s chances of survival.
I hope to live the mission of pushing the limits, persisting through the pain and power forward, not just in training but in every aspect of my life in honor of the strong cancer heroes and their families who bravely come together to overcome unthinkable obstacles. I am thrilled to be able to learn from and honor a particular family and work hard to help them in any way I can.
My family lost my aunt Maribeth at the age of 24. I am named after Maribeth and I am 23 - the same age she was when she was diagnosed and did everything she could to get well and be able to run again. Maribeth lost her individual battle but since then my extended family (including grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins) have stayed in the war by becoming focused on cancer-related causes, including by being actively involved in Family Reach. Understanding how cancer can devastate families emotionally and financially has been a major part of our upbringing.
Since I was a little girl, every third Monday in April my family has stood curbside in Newton- cheering, watching and admiring the determined warriors pushing up that 17th mile at Heartbreak Hill. I am excited for it to be my turn and to embark on the scariest yet most exciting thing I have set out to do. I can't wait to see how the next couple of months play out and I am excited to share this journey with you.
Please join me in this fight to alleviate the financial burden of cancer and bring home those warriors affected. Thank you for your support!
