It’s that time of year again! That’s right, it’s Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon, fall edition! This is something that Jefferson and I have been participating in (with occasional appearances from Solomon) for years now, going back to 2015. Not everyone who participates on the Readathon uses it as a fundraiser, but we like raising money for a good cause, our friends cheering us on, and those per book and per page pledges to motivate us to keep reading when computer games or sleep beckon... We always like to pick a beneficiary that promotes literacy and the love of reading, and in the past we’ve raised money for RIF, First Book, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, and the Capital Area Reading Coalition.
This year we are raising money for Friends of the Lansing Library! We use our local library a lot, and while I thought that we'd supported them with a readathon before, when I looked it up, it turned out while I'd made a small donation to them for a small #loveyourlibrary readathon, we hadn't done a full 24 Hour Readathon fundraiser for them. And considering how much they do -- not just in making it possible for kids to check out books, but hosting after-school tutoring, English as a second language tutoring, the summer reading programs, partnering with other local organizations to bring literacy programs to kids and families... Well, it made this year's choice very easy.
