"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not enough every man's greed."- Mahatma Gandhi
There is a global threat to Endangered Species that directly impacts the world's biodiversity and coexistence of man with nature. While there are many reasons for diminishing populations of iconic species, poaching presents a huge threat in keeping ecosystems in balance and thriving for all to benefit, including man. In Africa, almost all species fall prey to poachers, yet some species, such as Rhino and Elephant cannot afford to be poached, as they are listed either Endangered or Critically Endangered on the IUCN Index list. The fight to save them is a 24/7/365 days a year battle.
Poaching by defintion, is the illegal hunting of species for their body parts. At the current rate, species such as elephants and rhinos are being hunted to the brink of extinction. Sadly, all could be gone in our lifetime. These species are sold on the black market daily. Did you know ounce for ounce, rhino horn is valued more than Cocaine? Within this black market, the illegal trade in endangered species is funding militia groups, terrorist groups, drug cartels and other criminal organizations. The income generated from this illegal trade is used to further fund illegal activities which these groups belong to. The supply and demand for wildlife products is a global issue, but certain regions, like some of the Asiatic countries, are at the top of the list. The wildlife products are used to make jewelry, chopsticks, carvings and more, or they end up being trinkets sold to tourists.
In order to combat the poaching endemic, it truly takes local rangers, either paid or voluntary, horses, canines, aerial patrol's and last, but not least, technology. In order to keep up with the sophisticated, and organized poachers, the APU's (Anti -Poaching Units) rely on the used of specialized technology, so that they can keep up with, or stay on top of the crisis. Sadly, the governments in the areas which are hardest hit by these poachers, are either corrupt, and in on the deal, or they are financially not able to keep up with the relentless war that is being waged on the world's wildlife. It is, to a large degree, left up to private landowners, game reserves and sanctuaries to try to stem the tide of poaching. It is with the help of private donors globally and organizations, such as WAF, to provide the boots on the ground, local organizations with the supplies and support needed in their daily fight. The purpose of this fundraiser is to provide to our two projects, The Rhino Oprhanage and Project Rhino, with the urgently needed Night Vision Goggles, which are vital pieces of equipment used by them to help combat this daily war on the ground.
