Almost 50 years ago, Eduardo Lopez de Casas was sexually abused first by his teachers then later by parish clergy. Not knowing what to do, he willingly shared his experiences with family and friends. Many believed what he had to say; others did not. Sadly, nothing was ever done to pursue those who had violated him. Two years ago, Eduardo connected with Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) and later became a SNAP Leader for the Houston, Texas bilingual-speakers support group. Because of his involvement in SNAP, Eduardo’s 18-year career with the Catholic Church was terminated. But for him, his healing journey is “about being able to assist other victims of sexual abuse by clergy” in the Hispanic community as a SNAP Leader and advocate.
The number of Hispanic survivors of sexual abuse by religious authorities has increased significantly by almost 450% in the past two years. Many of these survivors speak Spanish only, no English at all. Today, SNAP has just three Spanish-speaking SNAP Leaders: two in California, and one in Texas. To meet the need of Hispanic sexual abuse survivors, SNAP seeks to recruit in 2021 at least 30 new bilingual SNAP Leaders to facilitate support groups in Hispanic communities throughout the United States. To do so, we are launching a special project to translate into Spanish our SNAP Leader’s manual and other documents that survivor support group participants or community advocates would use.
This manual translation and SNAP Leader recruitment project is the focus of our GivingTuesday fundraiser this year. Our fundraising goal is $10,000 so we can expand our presence in the Hispanic community, providing support groups to sexual abuse survivors who seek to find a safe, compassionate, and understanding place where they can discover a healing path in their own life journeys.
Please share our GivingTuesday fundraiser for sexual abuse survivors of the Hispanic community with family, friends and colleagues who believe in our mission and cause via your personal email, Facebook, Twitter, or other social media accounts.
SNAP needs your help and your generosity to achieve our $10,000 goal.
