For my Bar Mitzvah project I decided to start a campaign to support the efforts of the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) to protect wildlife in Africa. Please donate to my campaign. Even a small amount helps.
- Why do I think this is so important?
Helping animals is important because they have a right to live good lives, like us, and they should not suffer just because they can’t protect themselves.
Nearly 100 elephants are slaughtered every day to feed the ivory trade. Rhino horn is more expensive than gold, and greedy poachers are eager to make a profit from killing these endangered animals. All of Africa’s great apes are endangered. COVID-19 has made it more difficult to protect the animals and the communities that live near them, as you can see in the video. We have an important role to play in protecting animals and helping communities, so everybody can live good, healthy and happy lives.
- Why is supporting AWF so important?
AWF is working around the clock to ensure that these threatened species have a place in our future. For example, AWF is equipping anti-poaching patrols, working with governments and legislative officials to enforce wildlife trafficking penalties, strengthening law enforcement with ivory- and rhino-horn detecting canine units and helping communities who have lost revenue from tourism due to COVID. AWF is making a difference for all of them.
I am also inspired by the example of Joan Bortnick (Z"L), my Uncle David's mom ("Granny" to us), who devoted much love, time and enthusiasm to help protect animals and communities in Africa for many years.
With your help, I would like to raise at least $6,130 (10 times 613.... 10 for the 10k I want to run for my Bar Mitzvah, and 613 for the number of Jewish commendments/mitzvot from the Torah). Thank you for contributing!
