We were lucky enough to travel to Ethiopia and get to know the kind and inspiring people there through a college study abroad experience.
Unfortunately, the nonprofit partners we worked with during our time in Ethiopia are in the midst of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Northern Tigray Region. After continued fighting between the federal government and the Tigray Regional government, almost all access to this region is cut off, leaving the population struggling for food, water, electricity, medical supplies, and safety.
Tens of thousands of Tigrayans have been displaced and killed since the conflict started, with over 60,000 refugees entering Sudan. Towns, homes, humanitarian organization offices, schools, universities, and factories have been looted by Eritrean and Ethiopian National Forces.
Humanitarian organizations and the UN have been attempting to enter the country to provide aid since the conflict began on November 4th, but the region is completely closed off. The lack of communication to Tigray has made it very difficult to determine the situation on the ground, however it is clear many Ethiopians are in dire need of basic and overall necessities.
We are raising money to go to Bruh Tesfa Youth Development Centre, a community center in Adigrat which students work with every year. We are sure they will need support once connection is restored, and we would love to help the local Adigrat community once the world is able to reach them. Any donation amount that you can provide is greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: After 60 days of not hearing from our partners in Adigrat, in mid-January, we were finally able to receive news that everyone we know is okay and alive. We are so glad to hear everyone is okay, but the situation is extremely volatile. The compound has been repeatedly visited by thefts, and the schools we work with have been looted. The city and entire region needs help, and it will take years to rebuild. Please consider donating and spreading awareness to prompt action from the international community.
