IT’S 2020: NO ONE NEEDS TO GO BLIND FROM CATARACTS
2020 VISION. According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.2 billion people are blind, or have a visual impairment; and at least 1 billion cases are preventable or treatable, cataracts are now among the most easily treatable causes of blindness in the world.
Ethiopia Health Aid (EHA), It Is Written, and Dr. Jacob Prabhakar are making 2020 an eye-opening year! Please join our movement to restore 20/20 vision to at least 2,020 patients in 2020.
A GLARING PROBLEM. Developing countries like Ethiopia, however, have had limited success in addressing this easily curable disease. Ethiopia’s 13 months of sunshine, agricultural lifestyle, severe lack of eye protection and education around eye care, lack of medical resources and screenings, all contribute to the way cataracts affect patients of all ages — from seniors to infants.
A GREAT START. Last year, Ethiopia Health Aid identified 15,000 patients with cataracts who were eligible for surgery. Thanks to their visionary collaboration, renown eye surgeon Dr. Jacob Prabhakar, It Is Written, and Ethiopia Health Aid safely and successfully provided 1,028 free cataract surgeries to patients of all ages at Negele Arsi General Hospital in rural Ethiopia.
REACHING OUT. Many rural Ethiopian villages in our service area are far flung and do not have simple luxuries like broadcast tv, radio, or social media. The doctors and nurses of Negele Arsi General Hospital had to make several community visits to get the word out – and provide transportation, housing and food to those who made the trip out, hoping to receive the Gift of Sight.
WAITING IN DARKNESS. While so many cried tears of joy, it was heartbreaking to turn away 13,972 patients in dire need of help. Sadly, the list continues to grow.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS GIFT. Dr. Jacob’s excellent skills and exceptional standards, combined with the team’s adherence to strict protocols and procedures, promises outstanding results. While any amount will help provide for our efforts, each donation of $100 will cover the cost of surgery, pre and post op medical services, food, lodging, and travel expenses for one patient and a family member. 100% of the funds we raise goes toward our efforts to provide the Gift of Sight.
LET’S MAKE 2020 AN EYE-OPENING YEAR!
