On April 27, 2019 I will be running the Cap City Half Marathon in Columbus, Ohio in honor of my late brother-in-law, Bryon Nino, and to support Racing for Recovery in his memory. Bryon passed away in May 2018 from alcoholism. Running became a huge part of Bryon's life and his sobriety. He completed his first race, the Springfield, Illinois marathon, in 2013 and went on to run several more races and ultra races, as well as many everday runs around St. Louis and Fort Worth. Running is something Bryon and I shared, and although we lived far apart, I am lucky to have run with him several times while visiting. During these runs we talked about the everyday stuff of life, but on one particular run he shared part of his story and struggle with alcoholism, and how running had changed his life. I hold the memories of our runs together dearly, and I think of him whenever I head out for a run.
As part of my race, I am raising funds for Racing for Recovery, a non-profit organization located in Ohio with a mission of preventing all forms of substance abuse by promoting a lifestyle of fitness and health for all those affected by addiction, including running. Your donation will support the work Racing for Recovery does to support those with addiction issues to find healing and sobriety through running and other physical fitness activities.
