The Equality Should Be Normal (ESBN) Barbara Murphy Community Resource Center, in honor of our Founder’s mother who passed away at 46 due to colon cancer, is located on the South Side of Chicago in the divested Washington Park Community. The ESBN Community Resource Center will offer many services to the Washington Park Community and its surrounding areas ranging from college and career preparation, mental health services, food/clothing/hygiene essentials distribution, youth safe haven, local policy and candidate information for elections with community impact and so much more.
A tentative weekly schedule for the Community Resource Center includes free community haircuts on Make Over Mondays, computer and STEM training for the community on Technology Tuesday, free onsite therapists and mental health services on Wellness Wednesday, resume and financial literacy classes on Financial Fridays, and free time and space for special events and programming the remainder of the week.
ESBN's goal is to raise funds to help commit to a 2 year lease including space overhead (furnishing, utilities, insurance, etc.). Any additional proceeds will go towards hiring full-time staffing in the near future as the center will be run by the ESBN team and volunteers initially.
The need for this center is immediate, and we are expected to open November 27th, 2020, aka "Black Friday". This is a significant date as while many Americans will be out shopping retail sales, there are many that will be dealing with trauma and stressing about where basic necessities, such as their next meal will come from.
All donations are tax deductible as ESBN is a 501c3 charity. To see ESBN's work in the community visit our website www.equalityshouldbenormal.com
