An overarching goal of the Eastern Queens Alliance is to promote environmental awareness and environmental science education for all children and adults with a view towards creating a keen sense of environmental stewardship and environmental justice advocacy.
The Eastern Queens Alliance has been the main steward for Idlewild Park Preserve for over twenty years. Idlewild is a 346-acre wetland preserve in Southeast Queens that is the head of Jamaica Bay. It is a significant part of the remaining wetlands in the Jamaica Bay System and is a major source of freshwater to the Bay. The Alliance has had as a major goal, the restoration of Idlewild and the creation of an environmental science learning center in Idlewild, replete with not only a physical environmental center building with classrooms and an interactive exhibit area, but with trails, boardwalks, overlooks, informational kiosks, open classrooms and activity nodes. The theme of the center will be “Man with Nature, Man against Nature.” Over the years, EQA has worked to raise funds for its environmental initiatives.
Currently, the hallmarks of the Eastern Queens Alliance initiatives are hands-on educational in-school workshops and field trips to Idlewild as well as after-school and out-of-school programs including online offerings during this period of COVID-19. It also offers weekend/evening workshops, tours and exciting recreational activities for families, and adults including an annual Family Fun Day and Reptile Show and a Biosail on Jamaica Bay.
While we continue to offer programs to inspire and excite youngsters and adults about the environment and its importance to all of us, we continue to need general operating funds to allow us to meet and expand current demands. This is especially true since the Pandemic. We are also seeking funds to help us put the infrastructure in place necessary to run our Idlewild Park Preserve Science Center which is currently under construction, slated to open January 2021. Your contribution will help us achieve this goal.
We need you! Won't you help?
