Due to the record fires buring in the Amazon rainforest this week we have created an emergency matching campaign to fund the protection of acres of rainforest in the Amazon. These fires were set intentionally and are burning larger patches of forest than ever before in recorded history. Rainforest Trust takes a sustainable and highly sensitive approach to protecting the rainforest which involves the native and local populations directly. They create opportunities for local groups to claim their land rights and become employed through stewardship, eco-tourism, and permanent protection of the forest, thus protecting the countless species of plants and animals that depend on each acre. With every acre purchased we have the chance to create the future we desire for the Amazon. Their current goal is to purchase over 6 million acres in Peru through purchasing land titless for over 220 indigenous communities in the Amazon. The major threats to these areas are logging, mining, oil and gas extraction and colonization for agriculture. These activities are closely related to the lack of land property legalization or usage rights in areas occupied by indigenous groups. Land titles will give the rights for legal management of the territories and resources to communities, and also the responsibility for their care in accordance to the law.
The Environmental Fund of Texas is taking an ecosystem approach to conservation and so that is why we have selected the Rainforest Trust as our choice for this donation. 100% of donations go to protection of the forest, not overhead or staff salaries. The funds go directly to Rainforest Trust, EFT is not a pass through organization. We promise to match $1/$1 for each donation made to Rainforest Trust up to $5,000 with a goal of reaching over $5,000 in publically sourced crowd funded donations. That would mean we'd reach $10,000 in matched donations and over 12,000 acres of forest would be protected at a current cost of $0.76/acre according to Rainforest Trusts current estimates. We also invite you to check out Charity Navigator to investigate for yourself the excellent and transparent work that Rainforest Trust is accomplishing. We believe that in order for the needle to move we must actively engage the public in funding the conservation efforts, legal battles, research, and educational advancements that must occur to save our planet from the growing threats of climate change, habitat destruction, and deforestation. We ask for your help in reaching our goal to protect thousands of acres of rainforest in solidarity with indigenous populations and the animals and plants that depend on this habitat for survival. The health of our entire planet depends on the health of Amazonia and the rainforest needs all of our help now more than ever.
George P. Avery, better known as Buzz, is the founder of the Environmental Fund of Texas. Buzz traveled throughout Texas, the United States, Central and South America, and Europe experiencing how other cultures in the world managed their environment, for better or worse. It is through this broad base of experiences that he decided to create a permanent fund to support efforts to preserve and protect the natural environment of Texas for future generations. Though the Amazon seems unrelated and far from Texas, the truth is that the health of the Amazon rainforest has a direct impact on the health of the environment in Texas. Climate change is rapidly accelerated by the deforestation and burning of rainforests, such as the Amazon. The direct impacts of climate change such as, increasing intensity and frequency of flooding, drought, hurricanes, and wildfires across Texas is directly linked to the increased buring of the Amazon to clear land for mining, cattle operations, and a growing middle class. We must do whatever we can to preserve and protect as much of the rainforst as possible before it is lost to us forever. The Amazon is the green heart of our planet and it must beat on.
