empowerHER was founded in 2013 with a very specific mission —to empower, support and connect girls of all ages who have experienced the early loss of their mothers. The empowerHER story starts with a young girl who has lost her mother. The empowerHER story is not necessarily about grief, but rather how we draw strength from one another and empower one another.
empowerHER has one mission with two programs: EVENTS for GIRLS take place in tandem with a thoughtful 1:1 MENTOR MATCH PROGRAM with caring and responsible community volunteers. Events remind the girls they are not alone in their loss and mentorship gives them a strong female role model as they traverse the difficult terrain of grief. All programs and activities are provided at no charge to the family.
Our demographics are diverse, representing girls from economically disadvantaged households and communities to those with greater familial and financial stability. We estimate that nearly 60% of the girls enrolled are from economically-disadvantaged families. But, in all cases involving the early loss of a mother, families experience unexpected debt from overwhelming hospital bills and funeral expenses. More significantly, the emotional toll is immeasurable.
