About
Empower the Next Generation

Help send 5 students to the Congressional Academy for American History and Civics! The academy is a two-week immersive educational experience that changes lives. One hundred high school students from throughout the country come together with their peers for a one-of-a-kind opportunity that strengthens their ability to effectively and responsibly engage in government and civic life.

The Backstory

This summer, high-need students from diverse and challenging backgrounds will travel to a college campus to study the Constitution with noted academic scholars, mentor teachers, and their peers. These young scholars and leaders-of-tomorrow will learn to use historical and legal evidence to present positions and share their unique experiences and ideas with their peers while also receiving feedback from experts. They will strengthen their skills in dialogue, deliberation, collaboration, research, and presentation. All of these skills lead to responsible and effective participation in society and civic life now and in the long term.

For many, this is their first time living away from home, visiting our nations capital, and experiencing the historical sites of the Washington, D.C., area. Without the Congressional Academy, high-need students would not have these opportunities.

This experience has been proven by Georgetown Universitys Civic Education Research Lab to increase students knowledge of history and civics and strengthen their attitudes related to political attention, discussion, civic engagement, and civic duty.

The Costs

Your donation will help fund the costs for 5 high-need students to come to the Congressional Academy in Baltimore in July 2020, including economy-class transportation, a shared dorm room, meals, and materials. It costs $3,000 per person to fund this opportunity. Although the Center for Civic Education has received a federal grant to support this event, we are required by the grant to provide matching funds from donors and other sources in order to implement the program. Donations are essential! We need to raise at least $15,000 through this fundraising campaign to make this possible.

How You Can Help

Please share this GoFundMe with your friends, colleagues, and family! Any amount you are able to contribute will help us provide this unique opportunity to young people. Please consider sponsoring the full amount of a young persons attendance ($3,000). This can have a huge impact on a young persons life! We will thank all donors on our campaign webpage and social media. Your privacy is important to us! You can always donate anonymously.
