In the past ten years, elephant poachers have killed about one out of four elephants to collect and sell their tusks. One organization that has made a difference to protect African elephants is Space for Giants. Space for Giants has helped protect the survivability and habitats of elephants in many ways. Farmers can sometimes view elephants as intruders and kill them. To prevent this, Space for Giants has taught locals about how the “intruders” are actually friendly and also built fences around the farms. To prevent poachers from killing elephants to sell ivory, Space for Giants has created troops to patrol the area where elephants live. When they catch poachers, Space for Giants supports prosecution of the criminals. These actions in helping this endangered species have produced outstanding results. They have helped to reduce poaching by 84 percent and also brought prosecution rates to 90 percent.
I am Emmett Pearlman. I am 13 and approaching my Bar Mitzvah where I need to do something good or a “Mitzvah” for the world. Elephants have always been one of my favorite animals and I knew they were being poached, so I wanted to help them with my Mitzvah project. When I saw Space for Giants, their methods inspired me to try to raise money so they can help. I am raising money through selling things at stands and asking people so I can help make a difference in the poaching of elephants. It would be very helpful if you donated and even a small amount helps. With more money, Space for Giants can help spread awareness and better defend elephants and their habitats. Please donate.
