Emma is a profoundly autistic 14 year old girl. She is beautiful, intelligent, humorous, energetic, compassionate, and most of all loving. She is also aggressive, destructive, manipulative, and dangerous. Emma speaks her basic wants and needs and understands everything that is said to her. She is otherwise non-verbal. Can you imagine for one second what that must be like? She finally breaks down and rips her own body apart out of her complete frustration over communication. Holes in her arms, her hands and wrists completely callused from her self-injurious behaviors. Emma requires 24 hour care. Care that I could no longer provide her as a single mother. She is a twin. Her sister is typical and the single most amazing human being with Emma. That didn’t stop her from being a target in Emma’s fits. Holes in the walls, broken windows, escaping…all daily occurrences. Making herself vomit around the clock when her want is denied. The choice was heart wrenching to make but Emma had to move into a group home. The steps leading to that moment could not have been done without the support and advocacy from Fight 4 Autism. I proudly am an officer for this organization that helps many families in my position on a daily basis. Donating to Emma will not only help another family like mine, but it will give Emma back 20% of all donations that will be used to offset the costs of her day to day life. Please consider joining Emma’s team, being a corporate sponsor, or making a donation, no amount is too small!
Thank you for your support!
