Emily Kavanaugh, who just turned 18, is a happy, interactive, loving ray of sunshine who adores Sesame Street, Barney, Dora, roller coasters, dancing, and YouTube. Her diagnoses include cerebral palsy, global developmental delays, a seizure disorder, scoliosis, and reflux. The Euro-Therapies Family Therapy Center (formerly kown as Euro-Peds), has been life-changing, for Emily. Their intensive treatment (four hours/day, 5 days/week), specialized equipment, and expertise have taken Emily from crawling, to walking in a gait trainer, to walking with a walker, to only needing a gait belt, and finally to independent walking. It's truly been miraculous. They continue to work with Emily on increasing strength and balance and fine-tuning all the complexities of safely and effectively moving her body through space. Physical changes from puberty brought increased challenges for Emily, with greater scoliosis and GI issues and a new, more complex body for her to reign in and figure out. There has been consideration of possible orthopedic and GI surgeries, which would likely bring both benefit and long-term issues and functional limitations. Thankfully, given Emily's continued progress through intensive therapies, we have been able to avoid those surgeries, so far. Due to her neurological and motor planning issues, every adaptation and new skill takes pain-staking, repetitive practice to learn and master. It is my hope that this stint at Euro-Therapies will help Emily continue to march forward toward increased physical prowess and more independent functioning. She has overcome so much, due to both her hard work and perseverence, and to the invaluable support and encouragement of friends and family. We are ever so thankful for that, and eager and hopeful to keep Emily on this positive trajectory.
Any donations will go toward offseting the cost of Emily's current course of intensive PT at Euro-Therapies. We are traveling to Michigan for a 4-week intensive PT program at Euro-Therapies as well as speech/oral-motor therapy. Please consider donating and sharing this link so we can raise money for the Euro-Therapies treatment and hotel costs. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
