Children in the Philippines who live in extreme poverty lack access to quality healthcare. They are often denied assistance and are unable to afford necessities to improve their quality of life.
Janrick just turned a year old and was born with spina bifida - myelomeningocele (myelomeningocele is a severe form of spina bifida in which the spinal cord and nerves develop outside of the body and are contained in a fluid-filled sac that is visible outside of the back area.) This fluid-filled sac had started to split and leak so two weeks ago Maya's Hope funded an urgent surgical repair for Janrick, thanks to our amazing supporters.
The surgery initially appeared to be a success and he was discharged. But Janrick's wonderful mother noticed something was not right. His surgical wound started to leak clear fluid. She took him back to the hospital and an urgent CT scan was done. The CT scan showed that there was an build up of fluid in Janrick's head. He had developed hydrocephalus post surgery and cerebrospinal fluid was leaking from his surgical site due to increased pressure.
Janrick was quickly taken back into surgery to have a VP shunt placed to drain the fluid.
We had to act quickly for his safety and health. We didn't even have time to fundraise for this second surgery.
This is where you come in! We need your help again to raise $1357 to cover the costs of this surgery.
His mother is so grateful to all of you for saving her child.
