Elmira's Wildlife Sanctuary is an all volunteer non-profit wildlife sanctuary. We care for large exotic animals, such as tigers, bears, wolves, lemurs and others. Elmira's does not buy, sell, or breed animals, does not allow public contact with the animals and does not take the animals off site for exhibition.
Captive breeding in the United States is out of control. Through no fault of their own, hundreds of animals are bred each year in order for the public to have "encounters" with baby animals. Once the animal has gotten too big to be handled, they are often handed off to road side zoos, traveling shows or private owners. If they are lucky, they end up at a sanctuary like Elmira's.
We are part of the Big Cat Sanctuary alliance. Some of our goals are to stop the cub petting in the United States and ban private ownership of large cats. We are supporters of the Big Cat and Public Safety Act working it's way through Congress.
Elmira's survives solely on donations and tour income. There is no paid staff. Please help us take care of the animals on a daily basis as well as help us build new, larger, enclosures for all of our animals.
