In 1997, Elissa Montanti had lost her mother, grandmother and fiancé and was struggling with crippling anxiety. She learned about the child victims of Bosnia’s civil war, and in an attempt to shift her focus away from her grief, she decided to help. She brought one child to the United States for life-changing prosthetics and found that while she was helping him heal, she was healing, too. Over the last 20 years, she’s helped more than 300 children from 46 countries, bringing them to the United States for transformative surgery or prosthetic limbs.
