My name is Jester Jersey and this is my Kiwanis story.
In 2015, Kiwanis Club International reached it's 100th anniversary and was also promoting the Eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Project(EMNT), a joint effort with UnicefUSA to combat maternal and neonatal tetanus affecting families around the world.
I had just learned about Kiwanis a few years prior from a book written by a member of Kiwanis who had walked across the U.S. many years ago. Because my local club was interested in sending a delegate to the international convention, I volunteered to go and also proposed my idea to walk across the United States to bring awareness to the efforts and fundraise for the Eliminate Project.
My club was supportive of the idea and I was able to bring attention to issue that Kiwanis and UNICEF had been working on, raising several thousand dollars and getting good media coverage. However, the work is not done. Many families are still suffering the effects of maternal and neonatal tetanus. Although the incidences of tetanus are being reduced worldwide, more work needs to be done to ensure that the toll suffered by many before Kiwanis and UNICEF banded together to fight the dreadful scourge of tetanus is never experienced by families again.
So for 2020, I want an opportunity to make sure that we can finally defeat tetanus once and for all. I will be working with other Kiwanis Clubs throughout the U.S. in various cities and states to make sure we can finally bring an end to the fight against tetanus. I believe that we can make a difference in the lives of others, and you can too. We can help families have a fighting chance against an easily preventable disease. Let's Eliminate tetanus once and for all together!
