The Day of the Dead is a grassroots, artist-organized event that combines Latin American traditions, culture and the work of local artists in memory and celebration of our ancestors.
This year we have decided to celebrate not only the dead but also the living--those who have been part of the long journey claiming Mt. Pleasant as their HOME and the heart of DC’s Latino community. This year we pay tribute to the music and the talent of Francisco Rigores and Los Invasores de el 80. Rigores and his fellow Cuban musicians changed the rhythm and the beat of our community beginning in 1980 and will bring that rhythm out on Nov. 2nd.
This one-of-a kind community concert will be videotaped in HD by professional community film-makers. The film of this concert will then be edited as a testament of Mt. Pleasant artistry and strength.
In the past, the lead artists and organizers have covered all of the expenses out of their own pockets, with some contributions of food, altar items, decorations, etc. On behalf of our team of 10+ artists and organizers, WE ASK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT so we can make this community event even better this year.
Please help us raise $5,000 to cover the costs and provide participating artists a small honorarium. And PLEASE join us for the celebration!!
If you want to contribute by writing a check, checks should be made out to DC Arts Center, write El Día de los Muertos in the memo line, and mail to: DCAC, 2438 18th Street NW, 20009.
