My name is Ed Mazel and I am a husband, father, attorney, and Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 2017, I started my journey into the world of endurance sports by completing Ironman 70.3 Arizona (Half Ironman). In 2018, I completed my first full Ironman in Cozumel.
I love challenging myself and pushing my limits and believe that we learn the most about ourselves when we push our limits. In late 2018, I submitted an application to participate in a three-day and invite-only triathlon known as Ultraman. As I have only limited experience in endurance events, I wasn't sure if I would be invited to participate, especially as Ultraman has no more than 50 athletes competing at each race. To my surprise, in February 2019, I received an invite to participate in Ultraman Arizona for its inaugural event on March 27, 28, and 29, 2020. Ultraman Arizona (ultramanarizona.com) is a grueling three day, 320 mile triathlon, with over 12,000 feet of elevation gain, that will take place just outside of Phoenix. The first day will start with a 6.2 mile swim in Lake Pleasant, followed by a 90 mile bike ride up to Skyline Regional Park. Day 2 is a 171 mile, 8,000 ft climb, on the bike finishing in Cave Creek Regional Park. Ultraman Arizona will culminate on day 3 with a 52.4 mile run over a 2,000 ft elevation gain.
Ultraman Arizona will be a true test of both my physical and mental capacity. As this is not the type of event one jumps into without preparation, I immediately hired a knowledgeable and experienced endurance coach to assist me in preparing. Throughout 2019, I have been training extensively to prepare for Ultraman Arizona. My family and I have been focused on this goal for over a year and have made many sacrifices in order for me to prepare myself.
Given the extensive dedication, determination, and grit that Ultraman training is requiring, I have determined that I would like to use this opportunity to raise money to benefit a local non-profit organization. My search for a non-profit lead me to Pegasus Legal Services for Children (http://pegasuslaw.org/), which is a local non-profit organization that provides much needed legal services to children and youth who have undergone extreme hardship. Pegasus plays an invaluable role in our community and provides legal services to children in the areas of education law, kinship/guardianship, youth law , and in cases of child abuse and neglect. Please review their website for additional information and services Pegasus provides.
My family and I have dedicated ourselves to completing Ultraman Arizona, and assisting a well deserving non-profit along the way. Both Pegasus and myself would be grateful for your assistance and support. Please consider donating towards this fundraiser, as it will undoubtedly make a significant difference in children’s lives. Pegasus is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and donations will qualify the donor to lower their taxable income. Any and all money that is donated goes directly to Pegasus, and will not fund or go towards any of my expenses associated with Ultraman Arizona.
