The idea of an international service trip to Guatemala began in 2008 with a spark from our daughter/sister, Meghan, who had volunteered there with The God's Child Project as part of a group from Villanova University. The spark ignited a fire in numerous teenagers who traveled with Teenagers, Inc the past 12 years to volunteer. Little did we know how it would change our lives forever and inspire our son/brother, Brendan, to leave his Philadelphia finance position at the end of 2019 to volunteer for a year.
Each year brought new challenges but never could you imagine in 2011 that a "vista hermosa" would bring your heart to the poorest site ever imagined. Climbing to the top of the hill to meet a family of 9 living in unimaginable conditions with little running water, a dirt floor hut, rationed food, and a garbage dump for their bathroom, imagine a mother of 7 worrying everyday how she was going to shelter and feed her children. Each day the children's smiles greeted us as we built and painted their new home side by side with them in their knit hats that were crafted by a parishioner of Our Mother of Consolation. With extra fundraising monies we were able to buy bunk beds and propane stoves for the family. All of their faces lit up with such joy and gratitude, you would have thought they just received a million dollars.
Families such as the one above are who The God's Child Project strives to help and serve each and every day. This is not just through home building, but also through food and clothing distributions, school education, and malnourishment treatment. These are key operations that Brendan and the God's Child Team oversee everyday to foster the well-being of the impoverished people of Guatemala. As God's Child Project ambassadors, we need your help to spread the word and increase donations for the financing of GCP's operations. We need your voices and actions. Thank you!
