For the last year I’ve been running as a mentor with Mile in My Shoes at the VOA home in Minneapolis for men transitioning out of prison. On Thanksgiving I'll be running the Drumstick Dash 5K with the VOA team to raise money in support of MiMS and would love your help.
MiMS is based in homeless shelters and re-entry centers for people exiting incarceration, and uses running groups as a way to build leadership and healthy-living skills among the residents. It provides a vehicle for the residents and community members to spend time together and find common ground. Over the last year we have run hundreds of miles together in the dark, heat, humidity, cold, rain, snow – and some breathtakingly beautiful days. We have done burpees in the street and meditated in a bank parking lot. We have stopped in our tracks to watch sunrises together and even once to rescue a lost puppy. Most of all we have shared trust, friendship, laughter, and tips to avoid chafing. There are people I’ve run with only once and ones I’ve run with dozens of times, but I remember every one because they have all taught me lessons about courage, self-confidence, listening, joy, and tenacity. Along the way I have seen dozens of residents literally changing the path of their lives – and who are now reunited with their families, working, living in their own homes, sticking with their treatments and therapies, and are still running.
MiMS brings people together through running to create community and change people’s lives. Please support this organization, even $10 will help reach my goal of raising $500. If you donate $31.41 (call that pumpkin “pi”) then I will bake and hand-deliver to your door a dozen running shoe-shaped cookies for Thanksgiving week. For donations of $62.82 (double “pi”) you will receive two dozen cookies in your choice of running shoe, heart or pumpkin shapes. Thank you for supporting MiMS!
MORE ABOUT MIMS:
Once again Mile in My Shoes is the official charity partner of the 2019 Drumstick Dash 10K and Pi Run 5k! Help us reach our goal of $10K - and help MiMS bring the transformative power of running to even more people experiencing homelessness in 2020.
Mile in My Shoes (MiMS) brings together residents of the Twin Cities with diverse backgrounds through the power of running. Based in homeless shelters and re-entry centers for people exiting incarceration, MiMS is as a catalyst for community-building, boosting health and wellness, building leadership and self-efficacy, and spurring personal and social action. By running together, our Resident Members and Run Mentors not only find common ground, but begin to learn from and reach out to one another for support. As they transform themselves, they transform one another.
