To make building wells even more fun, we have booked George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic to play a concert in Asheville on May 11. I hope everyone can go, because the proceeds from that show will go to build more wells in Togo, West Africa. For those of you that still want to help, but don't need a large dose of funk or aren't close to Asheville, we still need your help.
We are upping our goal to build two wells this year. These wells will follow the three wells that have already been constructed and are currently providing clean drinking water to thousands of people. Wehave built a great team that includeds the local knowledge of the Yoto River Waterkeeper, are employing a local well builder, and have established a system to appoint a trained water committee of villagers to oversee the well. We just need to raise the money to make clean water a reality for the people of Togo.
I can't explain how grateful everyone in Togo was for the completed wells! Teela and I were greeted warmly and everyone was very excited to have us return to help build more wells. The need is so incredibly great in Togo, but I can't think of anything they need more than clean water. The trip was such a life changing experience for Teela and I and we want to help them continue to expand their network of drinking water wells. On our trip we witnessed kids with swollen bellies full of disease, from drinking dirty water. We saw families drinking and cooking with brown water from the creeks, we watched someone haul dirty water out of a filthy concrete basin for cooking and bathing, and we helped an entire family haul dirty water over a mile from the nearest creek.
The well that everyone helped build will provide essential clean water to thousands of people. It will free up time for women and children to go to school and take care of the household, and this sounds dramatic, but it will literally save people's lives. Your donation can make this project a reality. Thank you for your help! See the pictures from our trip here.
