I am honored to be actively involved with Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) for 5 years. CRAB is a non-profit charity that provides the thrill, freedom, and therapeutic value of sailing for anyone with a disability, recovering warriors, and youth from at-risk communities.
Each year CRAB provides sailing experiences to over 1,000 guests from April to October. I have been very fortunate to sail with many CRAB guests and each guest reminds me about the importance of living life to its fullest despite obstacles that may challenge you.
As an example. I once had a young girl from the Maryland School for the Blind sailing with me. She was amazing because although she was completely blind, she learned to sail our boat perfectly and with precision just by feeling the wind, the water pressure as she steered, and the movement of the boat.
I am sharing her picture and a quote from the Maryland School of the Blind follows:
"The CRAB captains allow our students the hands on opportunity to sail a real sailboat. When you have no vision, you see with your hands. The captains allow the students to touch and feel everything as they explain exactly what everything is. They are so on cue with the students; they immediately get a sense of the level of the students and know how to modify the language to what the students can understand. I can't tell you how much this experience helps to build self-esteem in our students. They get such a sense of pride and accomplishment. The smiles are from ear to ear! I can't say enough about this program, the people that work it and the opportunities that it provides for our students! I fully support the CRAB program!”
Please support my team ‘Dream to Sail’ with a donation to CRAB to help it continue its mission to bring the freedom to sail to many who otherwise could not! Thank you!!
