Dear family, friends and supporters -
Next April, I once again have the honor of running the Boston marathon in support of “Dream Big!”, a wonderful charity dedicated to providing girls from low-income situations with sports equipment, uniforms, athletic footwear, training expenses, and most essentially … the opportunity to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education and overall well-being.
Many of you know that I have a 9-year-old daughter, Tara, to whom I dedicated my first marathon (and proudly ran it on her birthday!) I strongly believe that the self-confidence, dedication, teamwork, and pride that sports encourage are critical for all children – especially for girls. It is a sad fact that young women are constantly bombarded by the media’s depictions of an ideal beauty – one that is singularly unhealthy. I am excited and happy to raise money for an organization that seeks to reverse this trend and helps make our society more equal.
Over the past ten years Dream Big! programs have had a direct impact on more than 42,000 girls and young women in need through equipment donations, program fee scholarships, sports clinics and the “Dream Big!” Leadership Conferences for middle and high school female athletes from urban communities. I was fortunate enough to briefly meet a few of the recipients, and the impact that “Dream Big!” has had on their lives is undeniable and heart-warming. I am asking for your support to help develop the future female leaders in our community. I am dedicating this marathon to both Tara and (my son) Nathan – as a reminder that that our society needs more self-confident, strong women in leadership roles. And that regardless of age or gender, we should all strive to help make that a reality.
Any donation is welcome, but to provide a little context:
